PTA - Plan of Work
Our goals for the school year 2009-10 include:

The plan of work for SY09-10 is still being developed.  Please check back regularly.

The plan below is for SY08-09!

Membership - To ensure maximum participation in PTA programs and activities, and to ensure the largest voice possible when advocating on children's issues at Kanoelani, our Membership goals include:

  1. Recruiting at least 375-members for school year 2008-09.
  2. Submitting applicable dues to the State and National PTA units by respective due dates to ensure the unit remains in good standing.
  3. Qualifying for the HSPTSA 'Nene Award' by recruiting at least 100-members by October 1, 2008.
  4. Qualifying for the HSPTSA 'Creative Membership Award' for creative membership recruitment programs (must submit to state by January 31, 2009).
  5. Qualifying for the HSPTSA 'T.E.A.M. Award' for membership recruitment by March 1, 2009.
  6. Qualifying for the HSPTSA '10% Increase in Membership Award' by having at least 220-members by March 15, 2009.
  7. Ensuring all willing and able PTA members are given ample opportunities to serve and volunteer in activities, programs and fundraisers.
  8. Utilizing PTA members by providing Committee participation opportunities for standing committess, including Membership, Ways & Means, and Programs, as well as various ad-hoc committees as needed throughout the year (Pumpkin Carving, Gingerbread Night, Christmas Parade, etc).

Meetings - To ensure every member has a voice, and that the message of PTA is shared with all concerned parents, teachers, and friends, meeting goals include:

  1. Holding three (3) general membership meetings throughout the school year, to include the annual meeting in August, a general membership meeting tied to the 'Founder's Day' celebration in February, and the elections' meeting in May.
  2. Holding Executive Board meetings monthly at Kanoelani Elementary School.
  3. Holding ad-hoc meetings, both general membership and Executive Board, as needed, and as allwed for by the Kanoelani Elementary PTA bylaws.
  4. Holding committee meetings as needed in support of the goals and ideals of the Kanoelani Elementary PTA and its Executive Board.

Ways & Means - To ensure financial and fiscal responsibility, and to ensure the Kanoelani Elementary PTA unit maximizes its effectiveness through fundraising, the Ways & Means goals include:

  1. Working as part of the Executive Board in determining which budget items are appropriate for support by this PTA unit.
  2. Determining and managing the fundraising activities this PTA unit conducts, to include as least one major fundraiser in the Fall of 2008, Jog-a-Thon, and investigate the possibility of holding one minor family/staff dinner-type fundraiser/event in the Spring of 2009.
  3. Raising enough funds through a variety of fundraising and donation activities that all teacher 'wish list' items, as well as Kanoelani Elementary PTA unit goal items can be appropriately and adequately funded.

Programs - To ensure the children of Kanoelani Elementary, as well as the teachers, staff and parents, are provided the opportunity to experience growth, fellowship, and learning through a variety of PTA-sponsored and co-sponsored activities, the Programs' goals include:

  1. Participating in the 'Family Fun Fair' in October 2008.
  2. Participating in and co-sponsoring the annual 'Pumpkin Carving Night' in October 2008 by providing refreshments, decor and manpower.
  3. Participating in and aggressively promoting the National PTA 'Reflections Program' by opening up the program to children at Kanoelani, obtaining at least 100-total student participants, with a deadline for submissions at the school-level of the middle of December 2008.
  4. Participating in and co-sponsoring the annual 'Gingerbread House Night' in December 2008 by providing refreshments and manpower.
  5. Participating in the annual 'Waipio Christmas Parade' in December 2008 by taking ownership in a flatbed float, including the decorating of and providing needed parade participants.
  6. Organizing a 'Science Night' in January 2009 to aggressively promote the importance in, and the fun of science.
  7. Organizing a celebration in February 2009 to recognize National PTA 'Founder's Day' to coincide with the February General Membership meeting (typically a cake is ordered and Founder's Day is celebrated in conjunction with one of our Movie Nights).
  8. Organizing our 4th annual 'Jog-A-Thon' for late February or early March 2009, with t-shirts for every student, sponsors from our PTA sponsor list, and opportunities for parent volunteerism.

PTA Executive Board Officer Development - To ensure the officer team that represents the Kanoelani PTA members is most effective, it is important that the officers take care of 'back of the house' needs as much as taking care of the 'front of the house' needs.  The goals associated with officer development include:

  1. Sending at least 1-officer representative to Kanoelani 'School-Community Council' (SCC) meetings every month.
  2. Sending at least 5-officers to attend and participate in the Hawaii State PTSA convention in Spring 2009.

School & Staff Support - To ensure Kanoelani PTA-unit goals are developed and achieved as they relate to 'big picture' needs, such as capital equipment improvements, as well as teacher, staff, and service-student recognition, school and staff support goals include:

  1. Organizing a recognition luncheon or 'family night' dinner in May 2009 to honor the teachers and staff members of Kanoelani for 'Teacher's Appreciation Week', to include food, entertainment, and awards.
  2. Recognizing the service-students (ie. JPO, Student Council, etc) of Kanoelani in May 2009 with gifts of 'thank-you' for service provided throughout the school year.
  3. Recognizing 'Rainbow Students' at each quarterly event by distributin PTA 'gifts.'
  4. Recognizing all students who meet and exceed their annual reading rainbow goals by financially supporting the school's efforts in rewarding these same students (typically involves sponsoring bouncy-houses, etc).
  5. Sending a PTA Executive Board representative to monthly school staff meetings to keep open lines of communication.
  6. Support the Principal's Tea by providing refreshments and in-kind support.
